Sweet turned a little sour for anyone not called The bandit today, as a preposterous 17-under 19 opened the Major with the kind of statement that requires no exclamation mark, just a quiet nod. Nineteen shots. Par was thirty-six. The arithmetic is absurd, and the lead is already three clear of the valiant Miko, whose own 14 under would normally be the story. Instead, it is merely the silver medal in a race that appears to have been decided before the first candy cane was snapped.
